Toroa’s reversing gear jams and she strikes the wharf, damaging bow and bulwarks. [During later restoration of the reversing engine, it was found to have been incorrectly assembled. There were other incidents when the main engine stopped without reversing when required to slow the ferry on approach to her berth.]
