70 Million Journeys: Auckland Heritage Festival 2019

A note of acknowledgement to all who attended the Toroa Preservation Society’s events in the 2019 Auckland Heritage Festival, and our warm thanks for the support and appreciation expressed by so many participants. And thank you too for the donations towards the restoration of Auckland’s last steam ferry Toroa.
If you missed out on a heritage festival tour of the steam ferry restoration and would like to follow up (there were several last-minute bookings that couldn’t be accommodated) please contact the Society and we can let you know when we’re planning the next event.

Go to our Toroa Tours page to register your interest or to arrange a tour for your group or club.

70 MILLION JOURNEYS
The people and times of Auckland’s last steam ferry Toroa: Presentation & Restoration Tour

Toroa on a harbour excursion, late in her working life.
David Frith, TPS Collection

Join a presentation on the journeys of Auckland’s last steam ferry and her people. A tour of the restoration work follows.

In 55 years of commuter service on the Waitematā Harbour and excursions to the Hauraki Gulf and upper harbour, Toroa carried seventy million passengers in all, with many incidents and excitements along the way.

Hear the stories of owners, builders, skippers, engineers, stokers and passengers. Ladies and smokers; seat-hoggers, card-players and wharf-jumpers; poets, potters  and Prime Ministers. Toroa’s latest journey to Henderson for restoration and return to the Waitematā.

Entry by donation
Because of the nature of the restoration site, closed footwear must be worn and children must be supervised by adults
Access to the ferry is by steep stairs; we regret that there is no wheelchair access to the ferry or the meeting room

Location:      2 Selwood Rd, Henderson  (Head north from the Lincoln Rd junction on SH16 and enter via the adjacent construction yard.)
